Digital citizen humanitarianism: challenging borders and connecting weak ties

This article explores how informal, citizen-led solidarity with migrants is practised digitally and discusses we can conceptualise such acts. The study draws on digital observations, semi-structured interviews one field visit. Citizen humanitarians, who are informants in this study, supported from Afghanistan had been rejected asylum Norway. Support included facilitating unauthorised migration, transit, residency within the Schengen area, financial help, caregiving. By analysing these acts, scholarly debates citizenship regarding enjoys right to stay access social rights Europe humanitarian ideals of ‘saving lives’ threatened by deportation. show that citizen humanitarians use acts carry out borderwork were depended enabled weak ties. These practices fostered communities between them claim for themselves others. Based analysis, I develop term ‘digital humanitarianism’, which allows us be more precise about different forms humanitarianism facilitated digital.
